Understanding Dart Flight Shapes & How They Impact Your Game

Understanding Dart Flight Shapes & How They Impact Your Game

When it comes to darts, every detail matters. And if you’re starting to take the game a bit more seriously, you might’ve come across the different flight shapes - but what are they, and what difference do they make to your throw?

Here at Double Top Darts, we’re just as passionate about the game as you are. That’s why you can rely on us to talk you through the different dart flight shapes and how to choose the right one that will help you fine-tune your throw and performance.

Get ready to take flight… 🎯

What are the different types of dart flight shapes?

Typically, there are four main styles of dart flights, and they are:

  • Standard flights
  • Kite flights
  • Pear flights
  • Slim flights

You can also get your hands on some incredibly unique options that blend all of the characteristics of the shapes above, like arrowheads, V-wings, and shields.

But for now, let’s go into a bit more detail about the four core shapes.

Standard dart Flights

These are the most widely used dart flights, giving them their ‘standard’ name. Standard shape flights offer a broader surface area for better stability and are ideal for beginners or players who have a harder throw, helping the darts land more accurately. However, the flight can travel much slower due to the larger surface area.

Kite dart flights

Next up are kite-shaped dart flights. These flights taper at the base, giving you less drag while still keeping you in full control. They are more suited to those who prefer a quicker throw or who use much lighter darts. They’re much faster at travelling through the air, but can be less forgiving if you throw a bad dart.

Kite flights also cover less of the target, so they are a great option when trying to group darts together.

Pear dart flights

Pear-shaped dart flights are much rounder and smaller, so they give you less stability but plenty more speed. They are also a good option for fast, lighter throws, and players who are looking for a snappier release. However, be aware that they offer less aerodynamic stability than standard or kite shapes.

Slim dart flights

The final, most common dart flight shape is a slim flight. They have less surface area than the other shapes, and a tapered, boxy profile. This allows you to change how the dart travels through the air, best suited for fast, aggressive throwers.

Other less common dart flight shapes

Beyond these basic shapes, there are countless more variations. These more unique shapes include specialised designs that pros use, changing how fast the dart travels and sits in the board. Here are a few examples:

  • Vortex flights - Featuring very narrow, tapered profiles that resemble an arrowhead.
  • Fan tail flights - A small, flared-like shape that catches a minimal amount of air.
  • Astra flights - A distinct diamond-like shape built for faster throwing styles.
  • Bullet flights - Extremely small, bullet-like fins are designed for lightning-fast throws.

Here at Double Top, you can customise your dart flights to suit your throw. We’ve got an amazing selection of dart flights, all available in a variety of shapes and colours, so that you can completely customise your game.

Why do dart flights matter?

Dart flights are an incredibly important part of your dart kit. That’s because their shape, size, and thickness can control the speed, stability, and lift of your darts as they travel through the air and into the dartboard.

Here’s exactly how your dart flights can change performance:

  • Larger flights can act as a parachute, whereas small flights can reduce drag and allow your dart to travel faster
  • Big surfaces keep your dart under more control, which is what makes standard flights ideal for beginners. Smaller shapes give less stabilisation, meaning they require a more precise throw
  • Larger flights can also lift the back of your dart up, while small flights produce a flatter entry angle, helping to prevent bounce-outs

As well as your flights, you also need to make sure you’ve got the right dart points. Don’t worry, we’ll make it easy for you to pick with our best dart point recommendations.

What are the best flights for darts? Experts recommend

You now understand shapes, but what exactly is the best dart flight? Let’s see what flights our team uses, and why they love them so much…

Will uses the Target K-Shift Number 6 in Clear - “I love using the K-Shift because they completely sorted out my deflections. When you’re trying to stack three darts, you can feel a subtle spin, letting the second and third dart glide right in rather than bouncing off to the floor. The clear colour looks really cool, too.”

Sam J uses the L-Style Dimple EZ Flight in Dimple Black - “I honestly didn’t think the dimples would make that much difference, but they really let you throw with a smoother, lighter action. There’s no faff, and you don’t need to fiddle with champagne rings anymore - they just slide right onto your stem.”

Our other Sam, Sam H, loves Target’s F-Flex Number 6 One Piece Flight in Blue - “Target completely changed the game with their K-Flex flights. Since switching, I haven’t had to pick up a popped-off flight once! The bright blue colour also looks unreal against tungsten barrels.”

Harry  also loves the L-Style, reaching for the L-System Integrated Flight in Clear Black - “I love that this flight comes with a shaft built in; it means that no flights pop off halfway through a leg. I think it gives me a lovely, stable flight path because the material has just enough give. I’d highly recommend.”
