Ryan Searle is well known for using one of the heaviest setups in professional darts, but there is much more to his equiptment than just the 32 Gram barrel. His full setup combines his Harrows Ryan Searle series 3 quick point darts with Black 40mm QP HM Grip Points, L Style Carbon 225 Shafts, Red Premium Champagne Rings and Ryan Searle V4 Clear Black L1 flights.

Each part of the setup works together to create the distinctive combination Searle uses on stage, from the heavy torpedo shaped barrel through to the compact L Style setup at the rear. In this guide, we will break down every part of Ryan Searle’s exact darts setup and take a closer look at the equipment used by Heavy Metal.

Ryan Searle, nicknamed Heavy Metal, is an English professional darts player from Tiverton and is instantly recognisable for both his distinctive throwing style and his preference for heavier darts. Ryan is signed to Harrows, who have been producing his darts since early 2024. At the time of writing, he has had three generations of signature darts released with the manufacturer.

He is, of course, known throughout the darts world for the unusually heavy darts he uses, which have helped inspire his nickname, Heavy Metal. His walk on music also ties into the theme, with Searle entering to Paranoid by Black Sabbath, one of the most iconic songs from the heavy metal genre.

The Red Premium Champagne Ring is also used by Searle along with the flight and shaft. It may be a small part of the setup but it plays an important role in the L Style system as it helps to keep the flight tightly on the shaft.
The Champagne Ring could also help to reduce the risk of robin hoods where an incoming dart hits directly into the flight and shaft area. Improving this junction point will help to keep the setup in place and reduce the risk of damaging the shaft. These Champagne Rings are particularly convenient in Searle's setup, as he's using heavier darts. A heavier dart can generate more force on contact with the flight or the shaft so having the Champagne Ring in place helps to strengthen the connection and reduce the chance of damage compared to a lighter setup.

Ryan Searle completes the back end of his setup with L Style L Shaft Carbon 225 shafts to pair with his L Style flights and his signature Harrows barrels. The 225 is a Short Plus shaft giving Searle a relatively compact flight and shaft set up.
The shafts are made of carbon, and with a L Style Straight Locked build they offer a more rigid and durable option to the typical plastic shafts. They also have a large opening at the top for easy fitting of flights and protective prongs designed to support the base of the flight.
The system combined with L Style flights and Champagne Rings provides a secure connection between the flight and shaft, it helps keep the rear of the dart firmly together during play. The combination of Carbon 225 shafts, L Style flights and Champagne Rings shows the amount of care that Searle has taken to ensure that he has a strong and durable set-up to complement the heavy darts that he is known for throwing.

At the centre of Ryan Searle's setup are his Harrows Ryan Searle Series 3 Quick Point darts in 32g, continuing his well known preference for a much heavier barrel than most professional players. The barrel features intricate milling towards the front, including skull shaped detailing that ties into Searle's Heavy Metal branding while also creating additional grip points.

The black, silver, and red colour scheme continues Searle's signature styling, while ring cuts towards the rear add extra grip for players who prefer to hold the dart further back. As a Quick Point barrel, the points can also be changed quickly and easily compared with traditional fixed point darts, giving players more flexibility when customising their setup.

Completing the setup are Ryan Searle's 40mm Black HM Grip Quick Points, giving him a longer point at the front of his Series 3 Quick Point barrels. Developed with Searle, the HM Grip Points feature square cut rings that provide a clear finger reference for players who like to rest a finger on the point during their throw.
The black finish also ties in neatly with the overall look of Searle's setup, while the 40mm length is his preferred option within the HM Grip range. As part of Harrows' Quick Point system, they can also be changed quickly when a player wants to experiment with a different point length or style.
