Winmau was founded in 1945 by Harry Kicks, an ex Sergeant Major who named the company after his wife Winifred Maud (in the picture above). The company started to manufacture elm dartboards that were painted by hand until graphic transfers became an easier and more popular way to add numbers and coloured segments to the boards. In the 1960s they shifted to manufacturing bristle dartboards and from 1975 until 2018, Winmau were the official sponsors of the World Masters. Here is a video from that time featuring some faces you may recognise.
For over 70 years, Winmau has been a leading force in darts excellence, creating hand-crafted quality products from their purpose built factory. An iconic item from their repertoire is the Winmau Blade Dartboard, which first appeared over 20 years ago and is still hand made to this day. Now featuring a dual core and Density Control™ technology, these innovative boards are designed to optimise dart retention in the double, treble and bullseye zones and reduce bounce outs.
The global effect
Winmau products are sold throughout the world, not surprisingly as they are the brand of choice for leading darts organisations in many countries including the UK, Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and the Philippines. All of their championship dartboards comply with World Darts Federation specifications and you’ll have probably seen their name associated with some of the top names in darts as they have sponsored world champions including Michael van Gerwen, the late Andy Fordham and Dennis Priestley. They also have some of the most exciting players including Simon Whitlock, Joe Cullen and Scott Waites.
It’s not just championship quality dartboards that Winmau are known for. They are also the largest manufacturer of tungsten darts and at Double Top Darts we stock a huge range of these products. From steel tip to soft tip darts and in a variety of colours, styles and player collections, there’s a Winmau darts set to suit your playing style. Check them out here.
They are constantly homing the current products and coming up with new ideas. One of our favourites that has proved very popular is the Miniature dartboard dart holder, part of the new range.
The triple core on the Blade6 dartboard has taken years of research and experimentation. All areas of the board are scientifically scrutinised. From the biscuits holding the sisal together, to the spider, experimenting with different angles and its effect. Then two men continually fire darts at it to thoroughly test it out, every day!
We have been privy to the design lab at Winmau HQ and the creativity knows no limits. One of our favourite products in the pipeline is the The Edge Corner Bracket With the advent of the pandemic a lot of us are playing darts at home. However if you're 'man cave' is also your study/ garage or kitchen (!) this nifty product might give you the room that was not possible before!
The future of darts is safe in the hands of brands like Winmau as they continue to innovate and strive to further the development of this great sport. As the brand celebrates over 70 years in world darts, one thing is for sure, the name Winmau isn’t going anywhere.
