If you can’t get enough of the game of darts, or you’re new to playing and want to watch the professionals in action, this blog provides a round up of all the major darts tournaments. You can now literally plan your diary around darts!

February - May

Premier League

Premier League Darts launched on Sky Sports in 2005 and is now played every year between February and May. The tournament sees 8 players from the PDC circuit compete in weekly matches in a knockout format. It is considered part of the sport’s Triple Crown, alongside the World Championship and World Matchplay.

July

World Matchplay

The World Matchplay is run by the PDC and held every year in July. This darts tournament is played on a legs format and is part of the Triple Crown. The event has been held annually in Blackpool since 1994 and is considered the second biggest PDC tournament behind the World Championship.

October

PDC World Grand Prix

Held in October every year, this tournament was traditionally held in Dublin Ireland, but came to Coventry in 2020 due to Covid restrictions and was held in Leicester in 2021 and 2022. It is the only televised tournament in which each player must start and finish each leg on a double. Despite a few changes in the format over the years, the competition has been a straight knock-out since 2000.

November

Grand Slam of Darts

Established in 2007, the Grand Slam of Darts is held annually in Wolverhampton. It has been classed as a ranking tournament since 2015 and although organised by the PDC, it also invited players from its rival the British Darts Organisation (BDO) until it went into liquidation in 2020.

December

PDC World Darts Championship

Starting in December each year and finishing in January of the following year, the PDC World Darts Championship is the largest darts event in the world. Held at Alexandra Palace in London since 2008, this championship has been running since 1994, when the World Darts Council broke away from the BDO.

WDF World Masters

To be held in December 2022 following a break during Covid restrictions, the WDF is a resurrection of the longest running BDO tournament which had been held annually since 1974. The darts tournament comprises the Men’s World Masters, Women’s World Masters and Youth World Masters.
