21g Steel Tip Darts
21g steel tip darts are a great choice for players who like a lighter setup but still want the dart to feel substancial in the hand. There are plenty of options available, with a huge range of barrel shapes and designs from leading brands including Target, Target Japan, Winmau, Red Dragon and Unicorn.
Although the darts all weigh 21 grams, the variety of grip styles, barrel shapes and machining means they can feel completely different when you throw them.
Who Are 21g Darts Suitable For?
21g darts sit towards the lighter end of the most common steel tip dart weights, making them an excellent choice for players who prefer a lighter, faster feeling setup.
There is no ideal dart weight for any level of experience, so 21g darts can be just as suitable for beginners as they are for experienced players. The most important factor is choosing a dart that feels comfortable in your hand and complements your natural throwing action.
Compared to a 23g or 24g setup, a 21g dart requires less effort to accelerate through the throw, which many players find creates a smoother and more effortless release. Others may prefer the more substantial feel of a heavier dart. Neither is better, it simply comes down to personal preference.
21g Tungsten Darts
Tungsten is the most popular material used in premium darts because of its high density. It allows manufacturers to produce a slim 21g barrel without making it excessively long or bulky, leaving more room in the treble bed for tighter grouping.
21g tungsten darts are available in a variety of tungsten percentages, including 80%, 90% and 95%, allowing players to choose the balance between barrel size, feel and budget that best suits their game.
Choosing the Right 21g Darts
The key to choosing the best 21g darts is selecting a barrel shape and grip pattern that match the way you naturally hold and release the dart. Different barrel profiles create very different feels, even when they weigh exactly the same.
Popular barrel styles include straight, torpedo, bomb and scalloped designs, all available in 21g. Barrel length and diameter also affect how the dart feels during the throw, so it's worth trying a few different designs to discover which works best for your grip and throwing style.
21g Darts from Leading Brands
Many of the world's leading dart manufacturers produce 21g darts, including Target, Winmau, Harrows and Red Dragon. Alongside popular ranges such as Target Bolide and Harrows Supergrip, these brands also produce signature player darts developed with professional players.
Popular 21g player darts include the Target Rob Cross Generation 2, Harrows Damon Heta Series 4 and Harrows Luke Woodhouse Series 3, giving players plenty of proven professional setups to choose from.
21g Darts FAQs
Are 21g darts considered light?
Yes. 21g darts are generally considered one of the lighter standard steel tip dart weights. However, how light they feel depends entirely on what you're used to throwing.
If you normally throw 24g darts, a 21g setup will probably feel noticeably lighter. If you're used to throwing 18g darts, a 21g dart may actually feel quite substantial.
Are 21g darts good for beginners?
Yes. 21g darts are an excellent option for beginners if they feel comfortable with your natural throwing style. Your experience level is far less important than choosing a weight that feels right in your hand.
Even professional players have very different preferences when it comes to dart weight, so there is no single weight that is best for everyone.
Are brass darts better than tungsten darts?
Not necessarily. The best choice depends entirely on your budget and what you're looking for. Brass darts are more affordable and are a great option for beginners or casual players.
Tungsten darts are denser, allowing manufacturers to produce slimmer, more compact barrels at the same weight. If you want a premium dart with a narrower profile, tungsten is usually the better option.
Do you have 21g soft tip darts?
Yes. Several major brands produce 21g soft tip darts. For example, the Target Crux 12 Soft Tip darts are available in both 19g and 21g.
Many steel tip dart ranges also have matching soft tip versions. The Target Scope 11 range is a good example, with the soft tip model available in both 19g and 21g, allowing players to enjoy the same barrel design regardless of the format they play.
